May 2017 Guidance Update

Our juniors continue to work in their Guidance Groups on the college application process. They have worked on conducting a detailed college search on Naviance and learned how the online application process works for the Common Application, SUNY and CUNY. Juniors will be shown how to fill out their Letter of Recommendation Form on Naviance, and how to request letters of recommendation from specific teachers. To this end, students are expected to also make this request in person. Therefore, teachers will have more time to write letters for students, especially as Early Action and Early Decision dates approach in the Fall. Over the summer, students should be taking the following steps in preparation for the active application process: visiting colleges, writing their essays and actively preparing for SAT, SAT Subject or ACT exams. Please look on Guidance News for information about possible SAT preparation courses and Financial Aid Night.

All students can utilize the Guidance News feature; it is of particular importance at this time of year when looking for summer enrichment programs. Many of these programs are not confined to upperclassmen. Furthermore, they are an excellent way of gaining experience in a field of interest and boosting one’s resume.

To all senior parents, this is a final reminder that the Graduation Survey is due on Monday, May 8th. When registering for courses in the Fall, colleges will need the final high school transcript; that information will come from the Graduation Survey, and is our only way of obtaining your child’s final decision. Thank you for your cooperation!

Sincerely,

Jeanne Malazzo
Director of Guidance
